July 20, 2020 – July 26, 2020
I was on a solo road trip up Vancouver Island all this week. There is a very image heavy post below.
Bucket List Items Accomplished
- Go on a long road trip. One day I’d like to go for a month or more, but I think nine days counts
- Stay in a cabin
- Fly a kite again
- Make colcannon
- Make hot buttered rum
Things I Enjoyed this Week
- I want to do 30 random acts of kindness over the next month. They don’t have to be everyday. My total count is now up to 20. I’m not going to make it by the end of the month, but I’ll keep at it until I finish.
- Gave a great tip to the whale watching guide. There were only two of us on the zodiac other than the guide since there were four no shows.
- Smile at all strangers for a day. It was easy to smile at and say hello to people I came across on hiking trails.
- I want to continue posting the new words I find in the wild from books or podcasts.
- Epistolary – a novel or literary work written in letters or diary entries
- I want to show the highlights of my road trip below. I saw so many beautiful sights on the island.
Road Trip
Day 3 (Monday, July 20, 2020)
- Strathcona Provincial Park – Elk Portal, Lupin Falls, Lower Myra Falls, Lady Falls. I was so lucky to have all these places almost all to myself. I spent about an hour alone at Lower Myra Falls taking photos and enjoying the view of the lake below and morning sunshine. Upana Caves – These caves felt like a magical place out of Lord of the Rings. Campbell River – 50th parallel, Rotary Seawalk, Discovery Fishing Pier, and Canyon View Trail.
Day 4 (Tuesday, July 21, 2020)
- Nootka Sound Day Cruise aboard the MV Uchuck III – We enjoyed a day aboard the boat and watched the crew deliver supplies to fish farms, a coastal logging camp, and an island fishing resort.
Day 5 (Wednesday, July 22, 2020)
- Sayward – Kelsy Bay Pier. Woss – Steam Locomotive #113. Port McNeil – Harbour, world’s largest burl, and Lady Ellen Point. Little Huson Caves – One of the most beautiful places I’ve ever had the luck to explore. Telegraph Cove – Historic village. I stayed in a historical cabin on stilts on the harbour and enjoyed delicious fish and chips at the Killer Whale Cafe and a beautiful sunset.
Day 6 (Thursday, July 23, 2020)
- Telegraph Cove – Prince of Whales whale watching. We had the amazing luck of seeing three humpbacks including one named Argonaut, the T69D pod of four transient orcas including a calf that was less than a year old, and a group of Dolls’ porpoises that swam, played, and jumped beneath and beside the zodiac. The ocean was like glass, and there was only myself and one other patron aboard. Port Hardy – Carrot Park, Tsulquate Park, Hardy Buoys Smoked Fish, Storey’s Beach. Port Alice – Link River Regional Park campsite. This campsite was gorgeous, remote, and peaceful with a spot right on Alice Lake.
Day 7 (Friday, July 24, 2020)
- Port Alice – Alice Lake Loop including the Devil’s Bath cenote and gorgeous lakes and forest along an active gravel logging road. I returned later in the day for a hike on the Marble River Trail and to see the Eternal Fountain waterfall. Cormorant Island – Alert Bay, U’Mista Cultural Centre, world’s tallest totem pole, ecological park, and Namgis burial grounds.
Day 8 (Saturday, July 25, 2020)
- Drove back down the island to spend the night at my Mom’s in Duncan. I stopped at Oyster Bay, Miracle Beach, and Goose Spit Park in Comox. Cumberland – Historic Town, Cumberland Village Bakery, Wandering Moose Cafe, and the potholes in the Cumberland Community Forest.
Day 9 (Sunday, July 26, 2020)
- Cowichan Estuary before driving back down to Victoria.

- I watched no Oscar Best Picture Winners.
- I taught myself no new constellations this week. I didn’t have good luck trying to spot the comet either.
Meal Prep and New Recipes Tried
- I made Colcannon following Strength and Sunshine’s recipe. It was actually a great camping recipe since all the veg holds up well and it just needs two pots. I cooked it on the camp stove.
- Hot buttered rum from the Spruce Eats was a great drink to have on a chilly night by the campfire.
Updates
- I am stretching everyday and following this 10 minute video from TrainLikeaBallerina for How to Do the Splits. This was on hold while I was away, but I’m back on it now.
