July 13, 2020 – July 19, 2020
I was out of town from midday Friday. I went on a solo road trip up Vancouver Island that lasted through the next week as well.
Bucket List Items Accomplished
- Buy something from an ice cream truck again
- Stay at a bed & breakfast
- Go spelunking
Things I Enjoyed this Week
- I want to do 30 random acts of kindness over the next month. They don’t have to be everyday. My total count is now up to 18. It might be a little bit more than a month at this rate, but I’ll do my best.
- Supported a bunch of small local businesses for food and lodging for my trip.
- Gave a good tip to the spelunking guide. They are running smaller tours due to Covid, so I’m sure larger tips from the fewer attendees is appreciated.
- I want to continue posting the new words I find in the wild from books or podcasts.
- Papilionaceous – leguminous plants with butterfly shaped flowers, such as sweet pea flowers
- Prelapsarian – innocent and unspoiled, of before the age of the fall of man
- I have decided to end my structured gratitude and photo project. I will continue posting photos as I take them and feel like it. It was a valuable experience for me to pause and notice all the small good things each day.
- I want to show the highlights of my road trip below. I saw so many beautiful sights on the island.
Road Trip
Day 1 (Saturday, July 18, 2020)
- Duncan – Saison Market Vineyard. I got a tarte flambe and some white chocolate raspberry scones. Nanaimo – Classic Nanaimo bar and peanut butter Nanaimo bar from Hearthstone Artisan Bakery. The harbour, Bastion, harbourfront walkway, and Old City Quarter. The Abyss. Ammonite Falls.
- Parksville – Top Bridge Park. Parksville Community Park and Boardwalk. Moodies Ice Cream Truck. Rathtrevor Beach. Rathtrevor Beach B&B.
Day 2 (Sunday, July 19, 2020)
- Some of the breakfast spread at the B&B. Horne Lake Caves Tour. Courtenay – Nymph Falls. Campbell River – Elk Falls Quinsam Campground. Elk River Falls.
- I watched no Oscar Best Picture Winners.
- I taught myself no new constellations this week. I didn’t have good luck trying to spot the comet either.

Meal Prep and New Recipes Tried
I continued with my Japanese recipe streak this week with a couple of desserts and tofu edamame cakes.
- I made Campfire Banana Boats from Fresh Off the Grid’s recipe. I made the classic smores version with chocolate, marshmallows, and graham crackers. Chocolate and banana is such a good combination. It was lovely to have an easy, warm, gooey dessert for a chilly camping evening.
- I cooked lots of things over the fire while I was gone. Smores, chili dogs, corn, carrots, and potatoes in foil.
Updates
- I am stretching everyday and following this 10 minute video from TrainLikeaBallerina for How to Do the Splits. This was on hold while I was away, but I’m back on it now.
